In Sophie’s work the ‘assemblage’ process is important. Her interest in the relationship between chance and intention allows for a freedom and playfulness in her work, using a combination of found and made materials. The shift from reality to illusion and static to the transient are ever present.
Often, with reference to the traditional conventions of a still life, Sophie finds ways to distort the subject, and is drawn to the ambiguous narratives that are created in her paintings. Tiny creatures known as 'The Freaks' have continued to be an important part of Sophie's work and is a theme which she continually returns to.
Her more recent ‘Miniatures’ have seen her apply her ideas to smaller and more detailed works, where she seeks to manipulate light and space, combining realism whilst abstracting fantasy.
